The Foundation of Achievements
Matthew 7:24-27
The parable of the wise and foolish builders, which brings the sermon on the mount to a conclusion, may appear to be just comparing a believer in Jesus to a non-believer. Both would have similar needs to be met, like a location for shelter, but both shelters use different materials for the foundation. This comparison possibly leads Jesus’s hearers to discern the two types of lifestyles. But with the consideration of the two preceding concepts that Jesus presents in Matthew 7:15-23 concerning false prophets and those who called Jesus ‘Lord, Lord’ and did great works yet were rejected from the presence of Jesus, a deeper need for the hearers of Jesus to discern their commitment to faith in God through Jesus’s instructions is revealed.
The parable of the two builders reveals the submission of those who hear Jesus’s words and do them (Matt. 7:24) versus those who hear Jesus’s words and principles, loosely hang onto them and even use them to do great things, but never made Jesus the motivation for those great act of achievements. This allowed trials to come and turn those great acts or achievements into a great fall, destroying everything they worked for. Is Jesus your foundation for your achievements? Or is He just the presumed protector of your soul for a later date?
