God's Instruction or Selfish Desire
There are times in life when the opposition seems to be building up all around you. Many times we can be quick to think, “Everyone is working against me.” Sometimes, when we allow ourselves to adopt this mindset, we may forget to consider God and allow Him to calm us down and submit ourselves to His instructions rather than living by selfish desire.
Jeremiah 21:1-6
The king of Judah finds himself and the city in an undesirable position; Babylon is making an effort to establish a blockade around the city. King Zedekiah does the right thing but from the wrong perspective. Judah is in a detrimental situation, and the king responds with a lackadaisical attitude essentially thinking maybe God can do one His amazing miracles that He is capable of (Jer. 21:2). This type of engage with God only comes when someone has only heard of God does not know God. To make matters worse, the priest that the king called upon believes and acts from the same depth of his relationship with God.
Jeremiah 19:15-20:6
Knowing that Pashhur not only rejected the message from God through Jeremiah but also fought against Jeremiah by having him put in the stocks displays how blindly humanity can be when they do not listen to God’s instructions. I can only imagine how he felt when the king summoned him to inquire of the Lord about the exact nation that he was told would capture the city and his household. There is a problem when we have faith but struggle to allow God’s instruction to guide our actions. God’s instructions never changed for Israel, and Jeremiah reminded them of what God had called them to
Read through the standard God had given them. Justice and righteousness were the leading characteristics, and still lead us today. The question is whether we determine that standard or if we’re allowing God to define that standard for us.
