Two Systems
Romans 7:7-12
The law from God gives us a system in which to lead a life that keeps us in a proper relationship to God. At the same time, it also identifies what is not a part of that relationship with God or even destroys the relationship. Paul presents the rhetorical question of whether the law should be labeled as sin. This is an interesting question because God is the source of the law, yet for humanity, it immediately identifies and gives life to sin within humanity.
Paul argues that the sin of coveting not only comes to life, but it also produces every kind of covetousness in him. It is recorded that the members of the church in Rome were predominantly of the lower economic class. He could be speaking into an issue of members living for what they didn’t have, and unfortunately, sin used the life it had from the law and produced death in humanity.
It is imperative that the focus of our desire be aware of which system it is working in; we will either be working in the system of sin, living by our desires without restraint, or living in the system of God and discovering what is holy, righteous, and good.
