Gospel Friendships

There are some significant finds we find the teachings and life of Jesus to be the true source of wisdom for this life. Experiencing life through the lens of the Bible leads to finding peace and joy. Paul wrote to the Corinthians that “God is not a God of confusion but of peace” (1 Cor. 14:33 ESV). As churches seek to immolate Jesus, there is an experience of joy given by the Spirit (1 Thes. 1:6). This joy and peace are a part of the relationships that we find when we are living because of the gospel of Jesus.

Acts 18:1-3

When Paul entered Corinth, he was alone, having left Timothy and Silas in Berea to encourage and equip the young church (Acts 17:14). All Paul had was his trade of being a tentmaker and the gospel. Paul’s willingness to submit his life and therefore his work to the Lord, he experienced the peace of the Lord establishing his direction (Prov. 16:3). Many times, we look at the work we do as a mere exchange of time for money or the path of leading to worldly accomplishments to appease our own pride. But Paul’s gospel-centered life experienced a refreshment and a new connection that would be with him for the rest of his life and ministry.

Luke gives the connection of the gospel between Paul and Aquila and Priscilla. I can only imagine the simple question from either Paul or Aquila: “What brings you to Corinth?” Both of their answers would have been: “the gospel.” Paul wanted to spread it, and Aquila and Priscilla were displaced because of it.  It is safe to assume that their unified belief encouraged them to work together in their trade rather than be competitors. There is a reason for us to seek out ways to be together rather than opposing one another.

Aquila and Priscilla joined Paul on his journey back to his sending base, Antioch (in Syria, Acts 18:18). They would also be a part of his ministry. His mention of them in Romans 16:3 gives the notion that they were the carriers of the letter, as well as becoming influential to the churches in Rome, and gave significant effort for the sake of Paul’s life.
Our friendships should give us great comfort, but when the basis of our friendships is based on the gospel, the peace of God can be multiplied to us and through us in ways we can only be grateful for and praise God for. Let the gospel center the effort of your life and see who God brings into your life to help tell the gospel.
