Comparison Can Lead to Truth
In addition to last week’s focus on comparison hindering the celebration and spreading of the gospel. When comparison is used properly, it can allow truth to be discovered. Truth is discovered when comparison is used to discern what is right, rather than comparing what will give us something material value or a desired experience.
When we comparing our standard to God we are drawn to the same conclusion as Moses was: “Who is like You, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?” (Exo. 15:11). Being in awe of God gives us the endurance to seek on God and patience to wait on God.
Psalm 130
Seeking God draws us to call out to Him. The Psalmist cried out with the knowledge of God’s forgiveness. The psalmist’s trust was so strong in the Lord that he waited for the Lord “more than a watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning” (Psalm 130:6). The watchmen were to stay alert all night to watch for anyone coming up to the city gates so defenses could be alerted if needed. As you could imagine, the relief of the watchman when the sun came as his shift would be over, but the psalmist states and repeats that his soul waits for the Lord. When we are satisfied in the Lord, we wait for Him beyond the receiving of blessings, until His redemption and steadfast love are received.
Waiting on the Lord is to desire to be fully satisfied by Him, and nothing else.
