Being Made by Jesus

Matthew’s record of the start of the ministry of Jesus, there are two distinct paths Jesus initiates. First was the preaching of Jesus to call people to “Repent for the kingdom of Heaven is at hand” (Matt 4:17). The second was the call of the first disciples, two pairs of brothers, Andrew and Peter, and James and John (Matt 4:18-22).  Each interaction had immediate responses, but the invitation for the disciples came with an expectation to be made into “fishers of men” by Jesus.
The term “make” gives us the process of placing certain characteristics and abilities to develop the goal of the disciples being fishers of men. In our modern-day culture, it is possible for us to lose sight of the divine attribute that comes along with this word. Paul uses a variation of this word to describe God making something without pre-existing material, describing how Jesus makes one new man— the body of Christian believers, where there were two— Jews and Gentiles (Eph. 2:15).  The stipulation to this outcome was that they were to closely follow Jesus. The first element of being a disciple is the closeness of a teacher and a student.
The result of the close relationship between Jesus and His disciples can be discovered in all the stories of disciples, but Peter expresses eight pillars that lead Christians in the path of godliness because of the knowledge of Jesus, allowing our efforts for the gospel to be effective.

2 Peter 1:3-8

The list of qualities expresses more than just an agreement to faith in Jesus. Rather, it is a picture of the transformation we experience when we keep our life close to Jesus, enabling us to increase in faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection, and love. These steps we take with Jesus are the only way for us to be made into true followers of Jesus.
